Fursys: Online Interior Consulting Service

Product Design
2021

As consumers’ lifestyles change, work space has been being redefined. We need an online consulting service that can expand existing office consulting services that were limited to offline, and that can reorganize the space to meet consumer purposes.

This project was designed by collaborating with Fursys.

User Survey & AR Measuring

The User Survey includes a card interaction similar to filling out a paper form. The final question of the survey asks the user to provide the dimensions of their space and allows them to measure these dimensions using their device's camera, eliminating the need for a measuring tape. The AR measuring feature identifies not only the size of the space, but also the placement of furniture and the type of furniture in each location.

Create a Space

A floor plan that also includes furniture is automatically created after AR Measuring in the User Survey, which can be found again in the Create a Space tab. You can edit the size of the space, select the view mode between 2D and 3D through the “Slider,” add and/or change the furniture. If there is anything changed, it is auto-saved.

Video Consulting

Market Research

Work space has been being redefined, as people’s life styles change since the COVID-19 pandemic. In accordance with it, the demand for online interior platforms increases for people to improve their work environment.

Office workers’ experience in working remotely
78% of office workers answered they have worked remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which is 16.7% higher than a year before.

Usage of online interior platforms increased by 129%

The Problem

Consumers need reconstructing their space for various purposes. According to the survey, the biggest reason for improving the work space is to separate it from the living space. It is said that the best condition for productive remote working is an independent work space and essential equipments.

The biggest disadvantage of remote working is the vague distinction between the work space and living space.

The Solution

Satisfying consumers’ need for reconstructing space and extending the current offline services by delivering Fursys’ outstanding space consulting services online.

Why should we apply this project to Fursys?

Consultation Process

My team brainstormed and ideated functions to maximize the offline consulting experience, in the planning stage to implement the offline consulting process originally provided by Fursys as an online service.

Usability Testing

Our goal was to check the usability of the features, including video consulting, AR measuring, and the virtual furniture arrangement. We conducted one round of usability testing with high-fidelity prototypes. The 5 participants were either interested in interior decoration or had worked remotely. In order to maximize the amount of relevant feedback in our tests, my group prepared several post-test questions:

  • Were there any icons that were difficult to recognize in the service?
  • Did you feel that the flow was smooth in experiencing the service?
  • Are you willing to use it for interior decoration in the future?
  • Were there any screens, buttons, or layouts that were inconvenient or awkward?

Wrapping-Up

This was the first project that I led the usability test. I learned much more than other projects at least regarding usability test. It was difficult to come up with the post-test questions as both a host and a designer. I had no idea that it takes much time to write the scenario instructions for test participants. Even though the time for the users to try the service is short, the required action of the users is pretty many within that time. When the participants took actions during the tests, I had to be careful of intervening in the users’ actions because each behavior of mine could influence their decisions.

I was quite excited because it was a real collaboration with a company. Hope to see this in real soon!
