Through the Building!

Poster Series Design
2022

The two panels—diptych—feature experimentation with typography as an emotive voice on a personal level, based on a chosen pair of memories—two memories that are related to each other in some way dictated by myself.

Each panel represents something about that memory that resonates with myself. I was supposed to visually explore how this can be expressed typographically by combining text from two different sources—one internal and one external—so called, “voices.” The internal voice was written/created by myself, while the external voice was copy I pulled from an existing source and integrated to further inform the work.

The entire texts of the imagery reflect my identity crisis, consisting of both the internal and external voices.

The texts of the internal voice present my thoughts/memories throwing back to when the 9/11 terror happened. The scene of an airplane crashing through buildings was so shocking that I remember it, even though I was three years old. The incident changed my life: my parents lost their jobs only because they were foreigners, and my family had to move back to South Korea. My identity confusion began when I was introduced as an American in a South Korean English-speaking kindergarten, while I could still understand Korean.

The external voice forms shapes of the aircraft, the Twin Towers, and the smoke with the texts of what was said by the people directly relevant to the terror, referring to the Transportation Security Administration releasing the actual audio of First Responders, Air Traffic Controllers, Dispatch Personnel, Airline Employees, Pilots, Citizens, and Terrorists.
